Day 1 — Athens: land, wander, eat

14:00 Metro from Athens airport (ATH) (€10). €10, 40 min to Syntagma/Monastiraki on line 3. A taxi is a flat €40 by day.
15:30 Plaka hotel, 2 nights (€300). ≈€150/night under the Acropolis. Everything on both Athens days is on foot from here.
17:30 Plaka & Anafiotika. Free. The whitewashed Anafiotika lanes are a Cycladic island stranded on the Acropolis slope — a preview of the week.
20:00 Souvlaki in Monastiraki (€15). €3–4 a wrap at the Mitropoleos street institutions; €15 covers dinner and a beer.

08:00 Acropolis at opening (€30). €30 Apr–Oct, TIMED slots — book online and take 08:00. By 10:00 the marble radiates heat and the queues snake; at opening you get the Parthenon in soft light and something like quiet.
10:30 Acropolis Museum (€20). €20. The glass floor over the excavation and the Parthenon-frieze floor aligned with the temple itself.
13:00 Lunch off Monastiraki square (€15).
15:00 Ancient Agora & Temple of Hephaistos (€10). €10. Where Socrates actually argued; the Hephaisteion is the best-preserved temple in Greece.
19:30 Areopagus rock at sunset. Free. The whole city pinks out below the Acropolis walls. Slippery marble — real shoes.

07:00 Blue Star ferry Piraeus → Naxos (€45). ≈€45 deck class, 4h. August sailings SELL OUT — book both islands' legs before you fly. Deck seats port-side watch the islands parade past.
12:30 Naxos Chora guesthouse, 2 nights (€240). ≈€120/night by the old town. Naxos is the anti-Santorini: half the price, twice the food, actual Greeks.
14:00 Waterfront lunch (€20).
16:00 Kastro old town wander. Free. Venetian citadel lanes above the port — cooler in every sense by late afternoon.
19:45 Portara at sunset. Free. The unfinished temple doorway to Apollo, standing alone on its islet since 530 BC — the whole harbour turns out for it.

09:30 Rent a car or ATV (€35). ≈€35/day. Naxos is big — the mountain villages are the point and buses won't string them together.
10:30 Halki & the kitron distilleries (€5). Free to wander; a kitron citrus-liqueur tasting at Vallindras is a couple of euros of pure Naxos.
12:00 Apiranthos, the marble village. Free. Streets literally paved in marble, 600 m up Mount Zas.
13:30 Mountain taverna lunch (€20). Naxian potatoes, arseniko cheese, rooster in wine — the island feeds itself and it shows.
16:00 Plaka beach afternoon. Free. Four kilometres of sand with room for everyone, even in August.

10:00 SeaJet Naxos → Santorini (€45). ≈€45, 45 minutes. The fast cats are weather-sensitive — if the meltemi is blowing, expect drama or delay.
12:00 Caldera-view stay in Firostefani, 3 nights (€600). ≈€200/night — the honest mid-point between Fira's noise and Oia's prices, ON the caldera rim. This is the splurge of the trip and it is worth it.
14:00 Lunch in Fira's back lanes (€25).
18:00 Caldera-rim walk: Fira → Firostefani → Imerovigli. Free. The classic path along the rim; every turn is the postcard.

08:00 Early bus to Oia (€2). €2. Go at 08:00: you get the blue domes with painters and cats. By 11:00 it is a single shuffling queue.
11:30 Seafood at Ammoudi Bay (€40). ≈€40. Down the 300 steps below Oia, tables on the water, fish by the kilo — agree the price when they weigh it.
14:30 Perissa black-sand beach. Free (loungers ≈€10). Volcanic sand gets kettle-hot — sandals to the waterline.
19:30 Sunset from Imerovigli, not Oia. Free — and the same sun. Oia's sunset is a shoulder-to-shoulder scrum; Imerovigli's Skaros Rock viewpoint gives you the identical sky in peace.

09:00 Akrotiri excavations (€12). €12. A Minoan town flash-frozen by the eruption that made the caldera — Pompeii, 1,700 years earlier, under a cool roof.
11:30 Red Beach viewpoint. Free. Admire from the headland — the cliff above the sand is genuinely unstable and the warning signs mean it.
13:00 Lunch in Megalochori (€25).
15:30 Santo Wines tasting (€25). ≈€25 for a caldera-edge flight. Assyrtiko vines grow coiled like baskets against the wind — 3,500 years of the same trick.

09:00 Last caldera breakfast (€15).
11:00 Airport bus or taxi (JTR) (€2). Bus €2, taxi ≈€20. Flights beat the 8-hour ferry back to Athens; book the leg when you book the trip.
