Day 1 — Copacabana bearings

13:00 Official taxi or 99 from GIG (120 BRL). ≈R$120 by app (99/Uber) to the Zona Sul. Use apps or the official taxi desks — never the arrivals-hall freelancers.
15:00 Copacabana hotel, 4 nights (2,800 BRL). ≈R$700/night a block back from the beach. Beach-block rooms cost more and hear the same waves.
16:30 Copacabana promenade walk. Free. The Burle Marx wave mosaic, footvolley courts, coconut kiosks (≈R$10). Beach rules: take nothing valuable onto the sand, ever — a canga and small bills only.
19:30 Churrascaria dinner (150 BRL). ≈R$150 rodízio. Turn the card to green and pace yourself — picanha is a marathon, not a sprint.

08:00 Christ the Redeemer by cog train (150 BRL). ≈R$150 with timed slots — book the 08:00 train online; clouds AND crowds roll in by late morning. If the peak is socked in, flip this day with any other.
11:30 Parque Lage. Free. The palazzo courtyard café under the Christ — the mansion is an art school, the gardens are jungle.
13:00 Lunch in Jardim Botânico (80 BRL).
15:00 Botanical Garden (30 BRL). ≈R$30. Imperial palms planted for a Portuguese king in 1808; toucans and marmosets attend without tickets.
19:00 Caipirinha at a boteco (25 BRL). ≈R$20–25. The national cocktail in its natural habitat — a plastic table on the pavement.

09:00 Escadaria Selarón & Lapa arches. Free. Chilean-born Selarón tiled 215 steps until his death and called it 'my tribute to the Brazilian people'.
10:30 Santa Teresa by the bonde tram (20 BRL). ≈R$20 return. The yellow 1896 streetcar rattles over the aqueduct into the hilltop artists' quarter.
13:00 Feijoada lunch in Santa Teresa (90 BRL). ≈R$90. The black-bean ritual — traditionally Wednesday and Saturday, and an afternoon commitment.
16:00 Sugarloaf cable car for sunset (190 BRL). ≈R$190, two stages. Time the second car so the sun drops while you're on top — the city lights come up over Guanabara Bay.
20:30 Dinner in Urca or back at base (90 BRL).

09:30 Ipanema beach morning (20 BRL). Chair + umbrella ≈R$20 from a barraca; they guard your spot, you buy their beers — the system works. Posto 9 is the scene; Arpoador end is calmer.
13:00 Beach lunch: globo, queijo coalho, açaí (40 BRL). ≈R$40 grazing from the vendors who sing their own jingles.
15:30 Hippie Fair or Garota de Ipanema café (30 BRL). Sunday: the Praça General Osório craft fair. Any other day: the bar where 'The Girl from Ipanema' was written, tourist prices and all.
18:00 Arpoador rock at sunset. Free. The beach APPLAUDS the sunset here. Genuinely. Join in.

09:00 Tijuca forest jeep tour OR ferry to Niterói (120 BRL). Tijuca (≈R$120): waterfalls and capuchins in the world's largest urban forest. Niterói (ferry R$15): Niemeyer's flying-saucer museum and the classic postcard view BACK at Rio.
13:30 Last lunch, kilo-style (60 BRL). ≈R$60. Pay-by-weight buffets are Brazil's great lunch equalizer.
16:00 App car to GIG (120 BRL). Allow 3 hours — the Linha Vermelha at rush hour is its own itinerary.
