Day 1 — Christchurch, gently
- 11:00 Collect the car at Christchurch (CHC) (490 NZD). ≈NZ$70/day ×7. A 2WD handles this whole route; book ahead Dec–Feb. Alternative worth pricing: drop the car in Queenstown and fly out ZQN — the one-way fee often beats Day 7's 6-hour drive back.
- 13:00 Christchurch hotel, 1 night (180 NZD). ≈NZ$180. One easy night to shake off the long-haul before the driving starts.
- 14:30 Botanic Gardens & the Ōtākaro river loop. Free. Flat, green, exactly what jet-lagged legs want.
- 18:30 Riverside Market dinner (35 NZD). A dozen counters under one roof — NZ$25–40 covers dinner and a local pinot.
Day 2 — Into Mackenzie Country
- 09:00 Drive to Lake Tekapo. ≈3h (227 km) across the Canterbury Plains. Fuel up in Geraldine.
- 12:30 Church of the Good Shepherd & lakefront. Free. The turquoise is real — glacial rock flour, not a filter.
- 14:30 Tekapo Springs (35 NZD). ≈NZ$35. Hot pools facing the lake; the winter ice rink becomes summer day-beds.
- 18:00 Tekapo lodge, 1 night (250 NZD). ≈NZ$250. Tekapo is a Dark Sky Reserve — if the night is clear, just step outside and look up; the paid observatory tour (≈NZ$169) is optional, the sky is not.
- 20:30 Dark-sky stargazing. Free from anywhere in town after the streetlights thin out. New moon weeks are spectacular.
Day 3 — Mt Cook & the road to Queenstown
- 08:30 Drive to Aoraki/Mt Cook village. ≈1h along Lake Pukaki — pull over at Peter's Lookout, everyone does, for good reason.
- 10:00 Hooker Valley Track. Free. 3h return, flat, three swing bridges, glacier lake at the end — the best effort-to-reward walk in the country. No shade: hat and water.
- 13:30 Lunch at the Hermitage café (25 NZD).
- 14:30 Drive to Queenstown. ≈3h15 (260 km) via Lindis Pass. Arrive with light to spare in summer.
- 18:00 Queenstown hotel, 3 nights (660 NZD). ≈NZ$220/night. Three nights here kills two repack days — Milford and Wānaka run as day trips.
Day 4 — Queenstown
- 09:30 Skyline gondola & luge (89 NZD). ≈NZ$89 for gondola + 3 luge runs. Go before 11:00; the queue doubles by noon.
- 12:30 Fergburger (yes, really) (20 NZD). ≈NZ$20. The queue is the attraction; order online to skip half of it.
- 14:00 Lake Wakatipu shoreline & Queenstown Gardens. Free. Save the adrenaline budget: if you're jumping, the Shotover Jet is ≈NZ$159 and worth booking tonight.
- 19:00 Dinner on the waterfront (45 NZD).
Day 5 — Milford Sound — the long, worth-it day
- 07:00 Drive to Milford Sound. Be honest with yourself: ≈4h EACH WAY (287 km), and the last 120 km past Te Anau has no fuel. The coach-cruise combo (≈NZ$229) exists precisely so someone else drives.
- 11:30 The Chasm & Eglinton Valley stops. Free short walks on the way in — the road itself is half the show.
- 13:00 Milford Sound cruise (119 NZD). ≈NZ$119 self-drive (2h). Rain is not bad luck here: the fiord grows hundreds of temporary waterfalls when it pours.
- 16:00 Return to Queenstown. Same 4 hours back. Swap driver, stop in Te Anau for dinner, arrive late. A 12-hour day — tomorrow is deliberately gentle.
Day 6 — Wānaka, the exhale
- 10:00 Crown Range road to Wānaka. ≈1h15 over NZ's highest sealed pass — hairpins with a view at the Cardrona pull-outs.
- 11:30 #ThatWanakaTree & lakefront walk. Free. Photograph the tree, then keep walking — the lakefront path outclasses it within ten minutes.
- 13:00 Lunch in Wānaka (25 NZD).
- 15:00 Rippon vineyard tasting (15 NZD). Small koha/fee. Pinot with the lake and Ruby Island below the vines — the classic Wānaka view.
- 18:00 Wānaka lodge, 1 night (240 NZD). ≈NZ$240. Roys Peak looms over town: 5–6 brutal hours if you must — this itinerary deliberately doesn't.
Day 7 — The road home
- 09:00 Drive back to Christchurch. ≈6h (430 km) via Lindis Pass and Tekapo. Break it at Lake Pukaki — or skip all of this by dropping the car in Queenstown and flying (see Day 1 note).
- 13:00 Lunch stop in Tekapo or Fairlie (20 NZD). Fairlie's bakehouse pies have a national reputation, deservedly.
- 16:30 Drop the car at CHC. Refuel before the airport; allow 3 hours for international departures.
